elow you'll find some valuable tips that can improve your play with the Romans whether you're a newcomer or an old hand. No approach is perfect, though, and there are certainly other equally good strategies.

All of the tips offered here are based on a game with high resources. The reason is obvious: You can get through the construction phase faster and more quickly get to the heart of the game, the development of the economy and the military.

The Advantages of the Roman Settlers:

balanced use of building materials (stone und wood)
less space needed for building
rapid increase in manna with few resources
divine intervention: convert the barbarians

The Game Begins ...

I am often asked what buildings I construct first. I'll answer that right away. A rapidly developing settlement needs a lot of the two building materials, stone and wood.

eginners can easily underestimate a colony's needs for building materials and as a result, some use their supplies to build an iron smelting works and weapon smith's works in order to form an army quickly. Others build a wine farm early on to get a headstart with promoting soldiers. Soon afterwards the initial resources are exhausted and they are up a well-know creek without a paddle.

Getting to the point: among the first buildings you want to construct are the ones that you need for securing a further supply of building materials: woodcutter's huts, forester's huts, sawmills and stonecutter's huts.

The one exception is a residence. Because the need for diggers, builders and carriers grows steadily, the very first building I construct is a medium residence. Be careful to build it in a favorable area. It could be disastrous if your diggers have to spend too much time with the residence.

Adjusting the percentages of your carriers, diggers and builders can have a strong negative impact on the course of the game. To achieve optimal growth, make adjustments cautiously and keep an eye on your need for settlers. My first step: building a medium residence. You are going to need more carriers very soon.
